I know this was discussed a while back ago but I didn't recall anyone recommending a safe and reliable ATM machine location (s) here in RJ?

I've been using Bradesco ATM's with no issues this and my last trip. (These ATM's are located inside a bank.) I did use a Banco 24 hrs ATM at Rio Sul shopping. It cost me $6 USD more to use that ATM vs Bradesco. The only time I had my card cloned was when I used it at a Banco do Brasil ATM at GIG. The GIG ATM's have been cloning cards for decades!

I've installed Skimmer Scanner on my Samsung Galaxy. It's "a free, open source app that detects common Bluetooth based credit card skimmers predominantly found in gas pumps. " So far, so Good. Youtube also has vids on how to spot a skimmer.

I went to Barra Shopping yesterday for the first time. I did find two banks inside with ATM machines and several 24 horas ATM machines scattered around but none of them were guarded by security so they seemed too dangerous to me to use. I was quite disappointed since I thought Barra Shopping being a high end shopping mall would have better security. This is my first time bringing my ATM card to Brazil. I still have a bit of cash on me but eventually I will have to use my card to withdraw funds.

BTW, I found two locations in Sao Paulo where there are safe and reliable ATM machines. The first is in Shopping Ibirapuera in Moema. There are several Santander ATM machines one the first floor with a glass wall separating them from the bank itself. The glass makes the ATM machines totally visible to the guards. The second location is in Iguatemi Shopping. There are three 24 horas ATM machines but they are located in an obscure location. I had to actually asked the lady at the information desk where they were. After entering the mall, follow the large ramp that leads you down to the all the stores. There is a small corridor to the left of the ramp, follow it all the way down and the ATM machines are to the right in a little corner. Every time that I was there, there was a security guard guarding the area.

Thank you for your input Sperto, coming from a Rio veteran such as you and Bravo really gives me the vote of confidence I need to follow through with this plan. I'm a person who loves to adventure outside of beaten path and try out new things. I think next week I'll go there just to get a feel for the area and check out a few hotels, including the one Bravo recommended and if everything checks out OK then I'm going to do it.

I stayed in DDC for 4 months (Lote 15 to be exact). Its definitely a place where you have to keep your head on a swivel at night (Many of the drug dealers/ muggers were pushed out of their favelas and set up shop in caxias, it can very dangerous at night), but during the daytime you should be ok. You can get a room at one of the hotels near the bus station (Novo Hotel is a good spot) , invite the milfs over during the day and then at night you can take a 5 minute cab ride to the Rei De Bacalhau club.
