Couple of weeks ago, I ran across a great deal for an airline ticket to Shanghai from the East Coast city which I'm from. Only $379 round trip on a decent airline. Had a bunch of Marriott points to burn so I thought I'd have myself my first overseas hobby adventure. Never mind that I don't know a lick of Chinese. I quickly bought the ticket before the sale ended thinking about all the tales I'd heard about the terrific and plentiful action in Shanghai. Few days ago, I get around to doing some research and ran across this great site. Much to my dismay, I start reading page after page about how abysmal things are with the LE crackdown and lack of action anywhere. It really kind of depressing to think what I missed in earlier times. Only wish I was there to see it.

Anyway, given the state of affairs in Shanghai, I think I should just cancel my trip.

Should I cancel or is it worth salvaging somehow?

I'll leave it to more experienced locals to advise you. But I've spotted USD $200 return flights from Shanghai to Manila. It's about a 3 hour journey. Why not spend a few days in Shanghai, as there is lots of tourist stuff to do and you can still test the local establishments that work for you. Then play more in Manila. The extra USD200 for the unplanned flights will actually save you cash overall. Accommodation and enjoyment are way cheaper in Manila.

While my ticket is non-refundable, eating $400 is better than spending the several thousands I was prepared to spend. Anyway, I feel like an idiot for not doing more research ahead of time but was really hoping for some feedback from those with more experience.

I second that. I was also in M on Sunday too. Last time I was there was probably a year ago.

When I was in Shanghai in July I was staying at the Fairmont Peace hotel on the Bund, because I had promised my Chinese lady friend we would stay there. Many 5 star hotels have restaurants on the 2nd, 3rd, and / or 4th floors. You don't need a key card to access those floors, so you can meet the girl on those floors if you are ordering outcall. If you are walking in with a girl, then as someone else mentioned, try to do it as early as possible, like before 10 pm or 11 pm. Otherwise, it will may appear obvious that you are bringing a WG into your room at 2 am. But even if you do bring a girl into the hotel at 2 am and security asks you to register the girl, then just register the girl. Yeah, pretty much every 5 star hotel has security on duty. But the hotel really doesn't care that you have a WG in your room. They only care about protecting you, since you are their responsibility.
