Their procedures obviously keep changing. Many years ago, if I asked to buy one ticket, they would sell me a paper ticket. But if I bought more than one ticket, they would give me a card. Very simple as the Metro makes money selling you the card, which used to be free but you could only obtain at a few Stations like San Antonio. And given the long lines at times for people to re-charge their card, or those looking for a single ride, it's best to load the card up. I actually have two Civica cards which I use, and I routinely re-load them with 50,000 COP each. Sometimes the ticket lines can be long.

A question I have for you and centro rats is this. Is it worth spending close to 100 COP with street girls in cheap hotels as compared to spending the same amount or 110 cop in casas where you are somewhat assured of better service and class? Stand in line, get your card but put 20 or 30 mil on it, that way you won't have to line up again for however many times the money lasts. Then if you see the line is short sometime when it is getting low recharge it again. That was not the civica card, just the regular one that is equivalent to a ticket.

One can recharge it in a green machine as well, using cash (and coins too I believe). The machines even have the English menu option (translation isn't the best though but it's like two screens anyway). Usually the line to those is much shorter than to the ticketing booth, often no line at all.

I think you still have to buy a magnetic card to use the Metro. If so, you can use that card to ride the trains and the Metro buses. You can add money to that card just like the Civica card, but only at a Metro station. The Civica card offers a few others things, like renting bicycles, but you probably wouldn't use those.
