You are right about the women making things work in terms of families, kids in the lower / working class. I get the feeling men play a greater economic role in wealthier families. I'm not saying they are faithful, if anything they probably have more women due to their money, but they support their kids and wives.

The lower class makes up 80% of the general population. The wealthier class would obviously control more of the money.

If you're into social anthropology, how about the Medellin saying, "When a woman cheats on you, it's with another woman". Just thought I'd throw that in there for no particular reason other than human interest.

But, I need to talk to more men and also more middle-class to wealthy people to get a fuller picture of how relationships and things work from their perspective (goals for the future). Anyway, I come from at this from a social science / anthropology perspective which makes me want to get to the bottom of how these social dynamics work. The way I see it, knowledge is power.

Here is a last general tip (for all of you) about how to deal with requests for money online or in person. I love the term "interesada". It is essentially equivalent to gold digger. I find if you preempt with that in a smooth, indirect way during a conversation it stops some requests for money in their tracks. Don't directly call a woman interesada, but you can say "intento mucho evitar las interesadas" (I try as much as possible to avoid the gold diggers) or something to that effect. Many Colombian women are quite proud despite their very real financial needs and they don't want to see themselves in that negative light. I've also said "Soy muy sensitivo sobre el dinero. Quiero estar seguro si estoy hablando con o viendo a alguien es porque tienen interes o why atraccion a mi como persona" (I'm very sensitive about money. I want to be certain that if I'm talking to somebody or seeing them that its because they are interested in and attracted to me as a person). Or "soy una persona con ojos abiertos why yo se que la amistad why amor verdadero no son basado en dinero" (I'm a person with open eyes and I know that true friendship and love aren't based on money). But I do think some strategic gifts are a good way to grease the wheels of any relationship. Just be sure it's on your terms.

And I love to throw in, "desde mi corazon" or that my gift is "from the heart". That seems to assuage the transaction further.

The only conceptual difference I perceive in what you wrote is that I see the women as the backbone of this country, and the men not being the strong, role model providers you listed. But I am going by nothing other than my own limited personal experience on that.

I have always had an unnatural amount of energy. And Medellin makes me feel younger still. My BMI (body mass index) is in the normal range, as are my cholesterol, blood pressure, and fasting glucose. I take no prescription meds. I am often mistaken for 10-20 years younger than I am. I have all my hair, my teeth, and my belly is flat. I never missed a day of work in my entire career before retiring in 2019 and I have been doing recreational drugs since I was 13 yo.
