Yes, let's move it out of sight, out of mind.

So this old chestnut has been trotted out again, so so so funny still as it is a totally irrelevant and outdated survey.

It has absolutely 100% skewed results and factors, due to its small, non random sampling, targeted survey population of low price non venue street workers.

In other words those that primarily service the local male low income Thai and Burmese population, not local expats or tourist punters.

Not to mention that it is as old as a century egg (as pointed out above).

Furthermore, it even says that other surveys had found results at the time of just 2. 5% in venue based sex workers.

This survey has no relevance whatsoever for punters punting in Bangkok today.

Unless possibly if they're picking up ultra low price street walkers way down Soi Nana.

Here is the studies summary and terms of reference.

The pattern of sex work in Thailand has shifted substantially over the last two decades from direct commercial establishments to indirect venues and non-venue-based settings. This respondent-driven sampling survey was conducted in Bangkok in 2007 among female sex workers (FSW) in non-venue-based settings to pilot a new approach to surveillance among this hidden population. Fifteen initial participants recruited 707 consenting participants who completed a behavioural questionnaire, and provided oral fluid for HIV testing, and urine for sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing. Overall HIV prevalence was 20.2% (95% confidence interval CI 16.3–24.7). Three-quarters of women were street-based (75.8%, 95% CI 69.9–81.1) who had an especially high HIV prevalence (22.7%, 95% CI 18.2–28.4); about 10 times higher than that found in routine sentinel surveillance among venue-based FSW (2. 5% STI prevalence (Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae) was 8. 7% (95% CI 6. 4–10.8) and 1. 0% (95% CI 0. 2–1. 9), respectively. Lower price per sex act and a current STI infection were independently associated with HIV infection (P < 0. 05). High HIV prevalence found among FSW participating in the survey, particularly non-venue-based FSW, identifies need for further prevention efforts. In addition, it identifies a higher-risk segment of FSW not reached through routine sentinel surveillance but accessible through this survey method.

I have a bit more than an elementary education, but I need you to explain something to me. How does your posted information account for the many Thai citizens who have HIV but get the proper treatment and their levels are so low that they cannot transmit HIV to another person? Does the 1.1% include those people as having HIV or not? I'm sure you are aware that the Thai medical system includes a large program to provide regularly scheduled lifetime treatment for HIV patients at very little cost to the patient.

    1. 1% prevalence means approximately 1 out of 90 people have it.

That's one out of every 90 Thais. Including old people, young people, police, teachers, university professors.

Except when you pay more attention and do your research before babbling, you realize the data of 1. 1% is ages 15-49. That's what footnotes are for. Common sense tells you 450,000 in a country close to 70,000,000 is NOT 1.1%. So it's not one out of every 90 Thais. Feel free to apologize to the Kingdom with the capital known to locals as the City of Angels.

Simple said. If you fuck someone with hiv (anal sex) there is a change of 11/10. 000 (that's 0,0011%) to get HIV (highest possible score for straight guys).

Population with HIV in thailand is estimated at 1%.

So simple math. Yes there is a risk. But being hit by a motorbike is more likely to happen.

When you look into prostitutes as a segment of the population, the percentage is much higher.

This scientific peer-reviewed study found prevalence of 20.2 percent among female prostitutes in Bangkok. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4935540/.

There were higher rates in "non venue" prostitutes, which means freelancers. Venue based workers had a 2. 5 percent prevalence.

Thailand has a high HIV rate. HIV is concentrated in sex workers.

Heterosexuals can and do get HIV infections. It's not such "simple math" because there are things like menstruation, blood, HPV, HSV and other factors that can raise the chance of infection several times over.

This is all undisputed fact that anyone with an elementary education can understand.

Thailand also has one of the highest road death rates in the world. Second on earth last time I checked.

And one of the highest murder rates in Asia. Higher than Myanmar and Bangladesh even. Over 8 times higher than Japan, South Korea, Singapore.

It's a pretty terrible place overall. A real third world hell hole. That's one reason so much of the population ends up doing prostitution. Well educated and adjusted rich kids from healthy societies don't often end up turning tricks to foreign pensioners.

Enjoy your time in the LOS.
