Hello guys,

I will be in Pattaya for a week around the 20th of January.

I already drive many times in Thailand like chiang khan, ayuthaya and chiang mai, I do have motorcycle license but not an international one.

So I know that it's "risky" but I was wondering if for you, you think it's ok to drive in Pattaya? I would like to move a bit more independently, is there many police barrage to stop you and verify?

Will I have to pay 1000 thb penalties every time I get caught? I really don't know how is it right now but from what I hear, they do more checks than old times:

My friend told me they're more lenient in pattaya, not as strict as in Bangkok.

Renting a bike (small one, up to 400 max) is the way to go in Pattaya especially if you're an experienced driver.

I've been driving there each time since my second trip in the year 2000 and never had a problem.

Last time I was there in November 2022, I've not been checked at all and I thought that checkpoints were less frequent that precovid, but I saw during my last day, at the moment I went to the bus station on North Pattaya, (I was not on my bike) the cop at the North Pattaya roundabout station was stopping every foreigner driving through that place.

Just learn to avoid their check points (mostly North Pattaya roundabout, sometimes the police check point at the crossover of second road with Pattaya Klang, the police station on Beach road), avoid doing anything illegal (avoid driving after drinking alcohol), drive slowly, be carefull about the road and all other drivers and you should be fine.

Last time I was fined was in 2019 (precovid), for two infractions (no international driving licence plus a Uturn at a place that was forbidden). Luckily I was told that I have 1 week to go and pay at the police station on Beach road (normally they take your document, ask you to go pay immediately at the police station, come back with the proof and then you can go), price was just 600 baht for the 2 infractions, but if you have 1 infraction you'll be asked to pay 500 normally as I've been asked in the past.

I see alot of impromptu checkpoints set up to catch Farangs like you. No idea of the fines, though.

I had been considering to visit Brazil for mongering, so I am kinda surprised you are coming to Thailand from Brazil. Wow.

Observations on 3 weeks with a bargirl:

She drinks a lot. Every night.

Since we are not in Thailand, she has no alternative but me for sex, so if she isn't too drunk, she will drag me into the bedroom. Whereas, if she is in Pattaya, she gets laid a lot, and I have to drag her into the bedroom.

She calls her Thai husband a lot to give him orders, since he is taking care of the kids. Apparently, he isn't very good at following orders, so there is a lot of fighting over the phone.

Not only tourist areas I think. If you read the news stories about Thai people's road rage and stupid fights about minor issues leading to even stabbing or shooting, it is fairly common also among Thais also.

My theory about this has been that for whatever reason, the personality development from child to adult thru adolescence for some reason has jammed to earlier stages (child or adolescent) for larger percentage of population than in the west, and as a result you have a child or teenager mind in an adult body. Maybe someone in psychiatric field could comment further about reasons and statistics; I am pretty sure someone has done some scientific research on this though the topic is sensitive as it would immediately be judged racist.

This is the very reason that I avoid any argumentation with Thais even in situations that they are totally wrong or at fault. They will never admit, and if bad luck when got one those with adolescent psyche. Odds are too low for you to win (you simply can not win with rational reasoning). Best just get out and move ahead, even with minor financial loss. Also applies to hookers not delivering as promised.

It's like arguing with religious people. Just walk away. No matter how much you explain evolution to these people they just won't accept it.

A bargirl I know decided to stop working in Pattaya bars and is now working in a Thai bar. Tonight, someone called her Thai boyfriend and alerted him that the bargirl was up to no good. Drama ensued.

Thai boyfriends can usually handle their girlfriends going with Farang customers, but not so much Thai customers.

Also, Thai bars are different, because the customers are locals and come regularly. Which means that they start viewing the ladies as girlfriends, or set them up as mia nois.

This is not to say that Farangs are unwelcome, but few of the ladies speak English.

Bargirls trying to borrow money are so common that other bargirls are posting complaints on social media.

Yes, they don't just hit up customers, they borrow from other bargirls, especially when they are leaving town. I normally just ignore them.

Bargirls need cash when they are returning to Isaan, so they can hand it to their Significant Other when they see them.

Would not surprise me at all. If you are a regular at any establishment you will see most girls are Not making bank.

Not EZ being a girl of the bar, or any establishment, including online.
