Thanks. But I don't travel with FX. I was amazed this last trip how common CC facilities have now become. I use Wise and for six weeks, I think I only used about 5 jt in cash. Everything else was on the card: Grab, meals, shopping, entertainment, everything. That was a family friendly holiday though, no mongering.

I didn't have any issues with fraudulent or extra charges.

There are a lot of dual note ATMs now. 1. 25 jt is when withdrawing 50 k notes. Look for machines that have 50 and 100 k notes. They will ask which notes you prefer and when you select 100 k, then the max single withdrawal will be 2. 5 jt.

This assumes you're using a foreign card. If you are using that ATM's bank card it won't ask what notes you prefer.

Unless this is a new modification on certain banks' ATMs, there should be two options on any given ATM to choose from before you withdraw your cash.

That is:

"accept with currency conversion" - This usually has the BS fees the ATM owner charges. It is just 100% pure profit for the bank. It is called DCC, Dynamic Currency Conversion and you are essentially giving the ATM owner permission to convert the currency for you, for a fee.

"accept without currency conversion" - This should be closer to the spot exchange rate and your home bank will do the conversion for you when it processes the transaction. It will still usually be less than the spot exchange rates you see on XE, etc. But much better than using the ATM owner's DCC.

Interesting if BCA has somehow removed this option. I typically use CIMB Niaga. In December, they still had the option to decline the bank's DCC (Dynamic Currency Conversion). And at CIMB Niaga, you can typically withdraw 3 million.

CIMB has the option to withdraw 1 M, 2 M, 3 M, but if you click Reject Currency Conversion after clicking 3 M, it will tell you that the request exceeds the maximum. So maybe the 3 M is only if you accept currency conversion. If you don't, 2 M is the max.

HSBC ATM's were the gold standard for me. 3 M no conversion. But those ATM's are hard to find now. I'm not even sure HSBC has a presence in Jakarta anymore!

There's a group of them usually congregating out the back when the band plays on a Friday night. I'm usually blind drunk by the time I get there and this may be the old beer goggles talking, but there are some decent types, as long as you're not looking for model quality. I've no idea of what they charge, but I would imagine 1-2 million in the current market. Why not trawl the aps, find a date and take her there (or somewhere nicer). It's not a bad boozer, but never really struck me as the kind of place I'd take an Indo girl for a date (unless she's a total lush).

I use an international ATM account that waives ATM fees. There's a new ripoff happening when I used BCA. They had a built in currency exchange rate that told you they charged 5%. So because it's not a flat fee, my ATM card can't waive that fee. I had to pay it. IDR is at 15500 for USD conversion and the BCA ATM converted it at 14800 for its service fee. What a rip off. The airport was selling IDR at 15300 and I should have just bought IDR there. Yes, I saw the single ATM, but just walk another 50 meters ahead, pass the door, and you'll see a bunch of exchange booths offering traveler rate.

Also, what's the deal now that so many ATM's limit the max cash out to 1,250,000? So stupid.

1. Use an ATM outside that is attached to a bank office. Usually they are safer.

2. Reject currency conversion offered. Every ATM will show that option (maybe in local language).

3. Always carry some money (maybe 200 K) back to your home country so that you can use for Taxi the next time you visit. I always keep some money as a backup but however use my card to book Grab from the Airport.

4. If travel into a country with no local currency, then bring high denomination home currency notes and exchange very minimal amount at the airport (inside or outside wherever they offer good rates) to manage the Taxi.
