Thanks for the responses gentlemen. I already have an unlocked quad band phone so that's no problem. FYI. If anyone's been with AT&T for a while you can call them and ask to have your phone unlocked. Be sure to let them know you're asking because you're traveling out of the country and want to have a local number while you're down there. They remotely unlocked my Blackberry Pearl two years ago. Which was promptly left in a cab upon my arrival (arrrgh! ). Of course I wouldn't count on getting an iPhone unlocked since AT&T is so protective of them.

But I'm still wondering about getting a SIM card from an authorized dealer vs the knockoffs from the street vendors. Another board says that authorized dealers require ID and street vendors don't. They also say that the unregistered cards can run into problems recharging when Comcel finds the rogue number. Has anyone with these cards had to buy a new card and thus have a new phone number?

Hey guys,

Looking to get a sim card to have a local number. Who's card do I want? I think it's Comcel. Columbian sims seem to be getting hard to find online. I noticed that Telestial had some explanation that Comcel is requiring that the cards be registered. Also read on another forum that in Colombia one needs to show their credula or passport to sign up for service is this true? If so then I'm guessing this might be why Comcel sim cards are out of stock at my usual online vendors. If the cards are supposed to be registered what happens if I buy and it's not registered properly with Comcel? Should I just wait and pick one up in Medellin? Is their a Comcel vendor at the airport? Sorry too many question marks in this post.

In Bogota you've always had to present a cedula or passport to buy a comcel sim.

This thread of posts about Mango really astonishes me.

Once for all: Mango is a NORMAL discoteque, where upper-class NORMAL people (that is students, professionals, clerks, office-type folks, etc. etc.; for sure, cover and drinks are not affordable by workers with minimum salary) goes to relax and dance mostly on weekends, exactly as in any other country where we live. Since "mafioso" type guys, as you say, have more money than others, it is possible to meet them there, but as in any restaurant in Poblado.

When I've been at Mangos, I've seen better-looking and nicer people than in most discos of my town (a big town in Europe).

I dont know who started to write about Mangos as it were a strip-club or even worse a "chica bar". Forget it. It is just plain wrong and out of context.

As in any NORMAL discoteque, at Mangos you might meet a girl who might like you and then you might proceed from there. As in any NORMAL discoteque, if you approach a girl assuming she's willing to get money for sex, most likely you are going to be slapped on your face, by her or by a friend of her (or worse).

Finally, if anybody goes in ANY disco in Medellin dressed with Hawaiian shirt, shorts, shouting prank things and pretending to be able to buy all girls, then he will probably not receive much welcoming attention, but not because of the dangerous place.

I can tell you for a fact that within the better class of Paisas, Mango's is not a place to go anymore. As of the last couple of years. It has a reputation as a place that has a lot of prepagos and mafiosos.

The higher classes of people have other areas they go to.

I need to get myself one. All the paisas have no minutes. The only reason they can afford to keep a phone is that incoming calls are free. Many have borrowed my phone and the minutes just shrink away pretty quickly!

I agree! I've heard so much talk about don't go to Mangos or discotecas because it's where the mafioso hang out. I was initially afraid to go to the clubs because of that. I've seen more danger in Mayorista type places and yet people go there again and again.
