It's cheap enough to keep it if you come to Japan often enough but I normally just do once per year for 2-3 months, so it's cheaper for me to just get a new sim card every time I come back to Japan.

I usually buy a Japanese SIM at Tokyo airport, and ask the staff to install it for me.
