Hi Angus Magee and Rainmadra,

I'm sure people will give you their favorites. I generally like to travel with a very loose schedule and often arrive in a town with no hotel reservation. This works out great especially since almost every German town larger than a village has a tourist office that can book rooms for you on the spot.

In Berlin, the tourist office is known as the "Berlin Infostore". There are at least 5 of them around the city, the easiest to find is probably the one in the main train station (Hauptbahnhof) on the main/ground floor. You can tell them your price range (mine is "billig" - cheap) and what part of town you'd like to stay in (mine is..."Billig"). They give you hotel recommendations and you can ask them to book the room for you. The tourist office folks will also tell you how to get to the hotel, whether it's by public transportation (my choice) or driving.

A disadvantage is that not all hotels participate in this booking service. For example, I would like to stay at Hotel-Pension Funk which was once the home of Asta Nielsen, a Danish filmstar in the silent film period, but they aren't in the booking system. Unfortunately, when I have arrived in town they've also been fully booked.

You can contact the Berlin Infostores (aka Berlin Tourismus Marketing) by email to inquire about hotels. Based on personal experience, it can take them a couple of days to get back to you. They don't acknowledge your note upon receipt but send a reply when they find an answer.

I forgot to add a caveat on arriving in a town without a reservation. It rarely happens but once I arrived in a town to find my favorite pension (yes, "billig") was fully booked as was almost every reasonably priced hotel because of a convention. In many cases, you can anticipate this. Frankfurt is infamous for scarcity of rooms and outrageous rates during the September auto show and the October book trade fair. I stay in pleasant pensions in nearby towns if I need to be in Frankfurt during these events.

I'd check the Berlin tourism web site to see if there are any major events during your time there which might affect availability of hotel rooms.

I am coming by plane so I know excactly when I come so I will not leave until last minute. I am concidering staying next to artemis, there are 2 hotels. That is becouse I am travelling with a "FKK Virgin", if he doesn't like (why wouldn't he? ) he can drink beer in the hotel and I can join him every now and then. That is if they allow to return to Artemis withouth paying again.
