Anyone try New York New York in Ueno? I asked, and they said Gaijin are ok. I'm Asian, so that may have made it easier. Seemed a bit too busy, so I decided to try it at a later date. I have just spent the past week in Tokyo and three days in Osaka; just like fellow mongers I have been checking the post for useful information. Taxi's are outrageous ($20-$30 easy per trip), but you can buy an all day train pass for 730 yen or about $5.25. At the train ticket machines, you press the "english" button, and press the discount ticket button. You will see an option for the Tokunai Pass. It's the all day pass. Don't forget to take the ticket when exiting the train turnstiles. It runs right through the machine to allow you to enter and then retrieve the ticket for future use that day. You can find alot of business hotels for 10,000 yen per day or less ($80 US a night). They are small though. Find one that is within 5 minutes walk of a Yamanote Line train station. Meals are easily found for 1,000 yen or less per meal (about $8.00). Portions are smaller though, for the average American. Juniour had a great post below .. He is right .. for any first timer, Shibuya can be a sight to behold. I refer to it as a giant ant hill. You have several streets going up hill away from the station. You will see literally thousands of people leaving the train stations and are making their way up these streets. Finding places are very difficult, due to the lack of street signs or addresses on the buildings. Land marks are invaluable. Always remember which exit you exited from (eg. Hachiko exit, East exit, etc.). Helps when returning.To be specific, there are 3 things that are expensive .. Mongering, Booze, and Taxi's. I know .. to some people that is everything. Everytime I'm in Japan, I just scout around the stops on the Yamanote line, and collect phone numbers of the one's that are interesting. There's one in Ikebukuro, that I have not tried, that looks better than the Star. It's near the station by, I believe Mitsukoshi. I don't think time is much of a factor, since the action is spread out .. Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, Tokyo Station, Shibuya, Ueno, etc. No matter where you are, the longest you'll spend on the train is about 26-28 minutes.
