Abbreviating "Japanese" to "Jap" is insulting/racist?
Copied straight from an online dictionary:JapPronunciation: ( jap), [key]?adj., n. Slang (disparaging and offensive). Japanese.Historically, this was used as a racially offensive abbreviation for a Japanese national and during my three year asssignment in Australia, it was used occasionally by the older Austrlaian generation simply for its offensive meaning. In the US, one would not likely be accepted in a globally culturalized environment if this type of slang were used, so I totally agree with the need for cultural sensitivity when claiming to simply be abbreviating the word Japanese!
Japs Were People We Fought in the War / Japanese are People We Know
I don't the history of the word 'Aussie', but the Japanese obviously never called themselves 'Japs'. 'Japs' were the bad guys we fought in the war.Anyone who is in tune with J-culture today knows that the word 'Jap' is inappropriate and derogatory. If you're looking for an abbreviation, just use 'J-' like 'J-Pop' or 'J-GF'.Finally, I don't know what a 'wog' is, but if it's a sexual position that a J-girl might do when giving me 'slope head', please explain!!!Regards,Sake
I can never understand why Australians consider that abbreviating "Japanese" to "Jap" is insulting/racist, yet we happily call ourselves "Aussie". Perhaps terms like "wog" or "slope head" do come under the racist banner, but a simple abbreviation should not imply anything sinister.
