I see no reason why you should give them your credit card number. Are you planning to pay by cash or credit card for their service, once you are here? I've always used cash... I always hire a phone as soon as I get to arrivals at Narita.I used my hire phone to call AM. Nothing was said about credit cards. I met the lady in Shibuya and we went to a nearby hotel. I paid cash for everything. No problems at all.It must be possible to hire a phone in Tokyo. You need a credit card to hire the phone, of course.

Just a brief report: found myself in Ueno with some time to spare and decided to give NYNY a try.
