I think He probably meant companies. Tokyo has two subway companies, Tokyo Metro and Toei, passes for one do not work for the other. Ie. One day passes, commuter passes etc. They include a discount which may not be honored by the other group. Suica and pasmo cards will work for all lines equipped with proper scanning equipment. Hanamizu is right about the two subway companies in Tokyo. Also, JR (East Japan Railways) runs several lines in Tokyo, including the Yamanote circle line, some underground. There are also too many private lines to mention, though most of those start somewhere in central Tokyo and run out to the suburbs.One day passes: Tokyo metro has a 1 day pass available for 710 yen that covers their subway lines.Toei has a 1 day pass available for 700 yen that covers their subway lines, official city buses, the Toden street car, and the Nippori Toneri Liner.There is also a combo pass available for 1000 yen that covers the Tokyo metro and Toei lines and buses.If you're using the JR a lot as well, you can get a pass that covers all the above plus all JR line stations within Tokyo proper for 1580 yen (called "Tokyo Free Kippu")Also, many individual lines (such as the Yuri-kamome line that runs from Shinbashi to Odaiba) have 1-day tickets specific to that line. It's usually worth it to buy one if you ride the line at least 3 or 4 times in one day.Sorry for the interruption in mongering reports!

I mean that there are two subway 'systems', Tokyo Metro and Toei. Sugamo is on the Toei system. It doesn't matter too much. One-day open pass Tokyo Metro mongers can just ride to the nearest Tokyo Metro station and pay a few bucks for the jaunt to Sugamo on the Toei system. As a recent Tokyo virgin, I'd recommend that other T virgins buy the one day TM pass at Narita, then take the ride up to Sugamo, bust your nuts on J-girl tonsils for ~$30 USD and spend the rest of the day doing more valuable things like sightseeing on the metro pass.
