One reason I recommended Kira Kira in Yokohama "for beginners" is that it is very budget friendly at 31K for 70 minutes ($202 currently). The girls are decent looking, not amazing, but "good enough". I've gone Japan many times and what I do to get the best rate is I withdraw cash in the US in 100s, say $3K, and then at Narita or Haneda Airport use the currency exchange there. I used to always use Mizuho but online it says they've closed. For whatever reason, airport exchanges within Japan give good rates unlike airports in other countries. If the exchange rate online was 152 yen / USD, they'd post 149 / 155 with no extra fees (I used a calculator after each time to confirm). So their margin of profit was only 2%. I can't vouch for every exchange being this good, but all the ones at the international airport were. At the Mizuho exchange I used, there was a max limit per person working out to about $2200 (the limit is set in Yen so the dollar limit varies). However it is per-person per-day so if you are with a friend they can do another $2200.

Many people will instead find 711 ATMs to be more convenient. Every 711 I went to had such an ATM and they are all international bank card friendly (most Japan ATMs are NOT). At the airport there will also be international card friendly ATMs, you can just ask the cute ladies at the information booth where to find them. It's a common request. Whereas in the wild, only 5% of ATMs in Japan will your bank ATM card. Japan ATMs are scary, they will spit out $6K worth of cash if you ask them. It is generally a safe country. But luckily, my own bank caps the 24hour withdrawl at $500, whatever that is in yen. So you can see why I bring $3K to "get me started". Worst case if you feel the airport exchange is not a good rate you can keep the USD as reserve for emergency and bring it back home. It is easy enough to walk into your bank and ask for $3K in 100s they are a bank they can do it.

It goes without saying there are terrible exchange rates at hotels and automated machines elsewhere. The airport rates are good due to intense competition, I hope that is still the case but it's been this way a long time.
