No criticism from me. Thanks for reporting on this. Gives everyone more insight as to what you could expect from being in a major accident in the DR.

It looks like you didn't need it in this instance, but did you happen to have the "Casa del Conductor" insurance option?

Mr. E has balls to pick up another car after getting into a wreck like that. I would be totally freaked out. It's one thing to get into an accident in the US but in a third world country your subject to all kinds of complications and just imagine if your injured and need medical help.

    The Car Crash

I left from the airport in Santo Domingo headed to the north coast. I stopped at Bon in Nagua as usual to get some ice cream. I continued driving through Cabrera. I thought to myself that I forgot to add minutes to my phone online so I needed to stop at a store to get a recharge so I could make some calls on the way to Sosua. At 4:30 pm, I went past a store in Abreu and decided that I would get a phone card from there. There were no other cars around so I stopped abruptly, looked back, then threw my car into reverse. There was a long straight stretch behind me. In the distance, I saw another car coming so I slammed on brakes and threw it in drive to make a left turn into the store parking lot. CRASH! The guy behind me saw me backing up and did not know I was turning left, so he decided to pass me on the left just as I was making the turn. The driver side door glass had been completely broken out and small fragments were all over me.

I sat there for a minute thinking oh shit. The guy (cool Canadian guy who lives in Cabrera) got out of his car and ran up to me along with many Dominicans who saw the crash. They kept asking if I was okay, but I wasn't saying anything. I was just thinking FUCK. They kept trying to open the door but that wasn't happening. They asked me if I could get out. Finally I grabbed the rental car paperwork and my phones and crawled out of the passenger side. There was not a scratch on me or the other driver. I went inside the store to get minutes so I could call Budget rental car assistance. The other driver or one of the bystanders made a call to Eddie, who is the law around those parts. Another lady who spoke English and said she just moved back from New York said the police would come and they are going to want money.

Budget told me that a tow truck would be coming in 45 minutes to take me and the car all the way back to Las Americas airport in Santo Domingo. I asked them if it was at all possible to go to Puerto Plata instead, but they said no. The drive so far had taken me 2 hours so I knew it would be 3 hours in a tow truck. They told me to bring the paperwork from the police and they would give me another car. After a while, a National Police truck pulled up and three officers got out. They suggested we try to move the car. As soon as I started it the RPMs skyrocketed so I turned it back off. We then noticed that the engine had actually been knocked out of the car. As guys like Jao have said before, the only ones who can work with traffic issues are the AMVET guys. The national police was useless.

Finally Eddie showed up in a Toyota Camry. He was the AMVET guy. He wrote some stuff down and took some pictures with is phone. He then said we needed to move the car. From the passenger side, I put the key in and put it in neutral and took the brake off. A bunch of guys who were still standing around pitched in to push it to a side street. The tow truck finally showed up and put the car on the bed. Eddie told the tow truck guys that we would have to go to the internet shop in Cabrera for him to make the report and to meet us there.

Me and the other driver got in Eddie's car. I got in the back seat and there was a big ass roach on the floor on the other side. WTF. We got to the internet shop but there was nobody there for Eddie to dictate the report to. We got back in the car and went to another internet shop. There Eddie took our stories then dictated to the guy what to type up. He never asked to see our driver's license, but we did end up showing it to the guy who was typing so that he could spell our names correctly. Eddie had to go outside to get the VIN of the car I was driving. At that time the other driver asked the guy who was typing who would be responsible for whatever payment. The guy said he didn't know. Eddie finally came back, the report was printed, all three of us signed it and Eddie put the city seal on it. He attached a copy of my information for the other driver and the other driver's information for me. The total cost ended up being 100 pesos, which the other driver paid to the guy at the internet shop.

The entire time I acted as if I could not speak Spanish. There were always enough Dominicans around who could speak English, including the guy at the internet shop. Everything was always on the up and up. Although you read a lot of negative reports in the DR threads about how Dominicans are, they showed me that they are a caring culture. There was none of that underhanded stuff with the police that everybody talks about and that the lady at the store warned me about.

I went outside to get into the tow truck with the owner and his son. Before going to Santo Domingo we stopped by his house / shop. I went in to use the bathroom and his wife was cooking dinner and his other two sons on the bed watching TV. I took a nap in the truck on the way to Santo Domingo.

When we arrived at the airport I went inside Budget and gave the guy the paper that I had gotten from Eddie. He said that it wasn't a police report. I said well that is what he gave me. I had to fill out another paper telling what happened. We went back outside for him to give me the next car. Just then he thought of something and had to run back in. It was a while before he came back out, but when he did he said that I would need a different card to put the next car on, because you can't use the same card for a different car after an accident. No problem, I have about 10. He ran one of my VISAs through with the usual holds of $1000 and $500 and made a new rental agreement for the same amount as before. We went back outside to look over the car and I drove off in a brand new Kia.

My original plan was to start on the north coast and work my way back to Santo Domingo, but because of the accident that is not happening. When I got back to Budget, I called my main girl in Santo Domingo to let her know I was here to surprise her. She was not expecting me until next Sunday and had taken off work next Monday as well so we could spend time together. She lives in Gazcue right off Independencia, which is right around from the hotel that I stay in. When I got to the hotel I paid the usual $40 for my room. My girl had not arrived, so I called my girl in Bonao who was not expecting me until later on in the week and told her that I was actually on my way to surprise her when the bad accident happened. I told her that I was back in Santo Domingo and would stay here a couple of days before I come. My girl finally arrived to stay the night. She got up about 7 so she could go home and get ready for work. She has an exam at the university after work so will not be returning until 8 pm. She told me to stay in and rest, but I told her that I will just go to Boca Chica to hang out until she finishes her day. That is where I am on my way to now. That fried fish is calling my name. So my plan has changed to work my way from Santo Domingo to Sosua. It will work out well because I should be in Sosua toward the end of the weekend rush.

I called American Express this morning to ask what to do about the accident. The lady said it would take about 10 minutes to go over the questions with me, or I could do it online. I opted for the online choice. She gave me the site to go to and it took me about 15 minutes because of the slow internet. I forgot that I had some things downloading at the same time that I was trying to do the forms.

No offence meant buddy, but you said they weren't "on par" so I assumed maybe fat and ugly. Please excuse my error.

I agree Mani. Frannie I never said it was a secret, I said only close friends know my spot. Plus it wouldn't be appropriate to get conversation about another place started on the DR board.

I haven't been posting much lately on the Dominican board because I have found my happiness somewhere else. I'm talking about a place that is completely safe and its a throwback to a time when people had respect and appreciated good romance and sex. Those of you who are my friends know where I'm talking about. Lets just say its the last place on earth like this. My advise to guys searching for such a place is to go where other guys aren't going and make your own paradise.

Fuck those Union tricks in Delrey who ask for 100 USD before they give you their name. It isn't worth it. Medellin is not for TLN but the girls can be had in a certain way. What I do is hit the strip clubs like Luna luneras, Sandiego, faze dos, and ejective and set up dates later by getting their numbers. They would come over before work and spend the afternoon and evening with me for 60 USD and then I could club hop late at night. The girls are beautiful and sweet but you have to keep it in check. For you guys traveling looking for wives and a serious relationship, be careful. Most of these girls from Latin countries don't adapt well to non-Latin cultures. Its easier for you to adjust to her Latin culture than her to yours. You can learn the language, the dancing etc. Guys with money and a weak heart WILL get burned.

    Stud Bucket.

I'm curious, do you negotiate TLN with a chica you've never been with? I ask because in my experience (and that of other mongers I know), this is generally a bad idea. It's just hard to know how your rapport is going to be until you actually fuck around with them. I hate to waste my money (and more importantly my time) on a chica that's not as good in the bed as she looked in the bar.

Early in my mongering career, I had a few experiences where I really regretted committing myself to all night with a chick that ended up being a bad performer. Times I would have gladly paid an extra $50 to get the chick out of my bed so I could sleep!

Since then, I never commit to TLN up front with a girl I don't know.. If we get along well, I might suggest the chick stay TLN. Or sometimes the chick will hint at it.

How do you avoid bad experiences with these TLNs? Or maybe you just get drunk and are able to pass out when you're not fucking them? I know that's what I used to do when I was much younger.
