I am from Pune who keep visiting Mumbai for Business. I usually stay for 2 days but travel with a relative of mine most of the times and hence do not get much time for mongering then. Go to RBI, you can exchange provided you have the details of your previous exchange. Airports accept 500/1000 rs.

I too have few notes of INR 500 and I don't know how to change them. But one must know that no one is allowed to import more than INR 10,000 into Indian territory. So, $2,000 is nearly INR 130,000. I think you will have problems to get them through the Indian Customs at the airport.

Price coming down but nowhere to get cash and so I drove back with heavy heart and disappointed johny hoping for a nice time once things settles down. I at least have the contacts to confidently plan the next trip.

According to me this recent changes has created acute shortage of cash among SPs as they are not getting any clients and so bringing the rates down due to desperation. I understand its a short one as they will be back once the cash flow improves.

I am new to Mumbai and the mongering scene in general. I am based out of LP in South Bombay. The only clue that I got on the forum was RR in Worli. Visited yesterday and the counter charges are high plus Ms. The quoted 3 k for TL and HJ. Wasn't ready to budge below 2.5 k. Did not want to burn a hole and let it go.

With the notes being banned and focus on cashless economy I feel this whole trade would be severely affected specially in short terms. Big impact for the businessman travelling from Guj on weekend and spending loads of cash here.

The move to ban notes is more to stop PAK fake notes racket rather than black economy. The suddenness of the move may make it inconvenient in ST, but I expect normalcy to be restored within 14-21 days.

Also, paying by bank transfer or CC or Payment or such is strongly ill advised. 10 k-15 k is a petty amount, and cash transactions will be done for such amounts, just be patient.
