You are right. English word play can be lost on a Thai. Presumably her name was Faa. You should not spell it with a "Ph" since Phuket is pronounced like Poo-get and not like fuck-et. If you write Phaa, many will consider it should sound like Par (which is a valid Thai name as well). Thai words translated to English use "Ph" for aspirated letter P and not for letter F.

Strangely, to a westerner, Fark and Fuck sound similar, but to a Thai they might not because of the change of vowel length. Vowel sounds are relatively unimportant (and pronounced differently in different countries) in English, but in Thai language, vowel sounds are critical and cannot be varied much without becoming unintelligle. Added to that, Thais might not understand if we use the wrong tone on a Thai word.

Thais do have play on words type things. One trick they like is a Spoonerism. E. g. "Men Hee Mai" (with right tones) means "does the pussy stink? But they might swap letters to become "Hen Mee Mai" which means "did you see the bear?" This allows them to say something crude without actually saying it. Another I heard was "Grabao Dynosork" which was rearrangement of "Grabork Dynosao" meaning a Dinosaur dick.
