This is the best approach.

Also worth exploring secondary routes which often by-pass the lobby / front desk area - specially from the restaurants in the hotel. (I am talking about the 5* ones in Airport area).

Hope you have booked double. While checking in itself please get reasonably friendly with check in staff and re-emphasise / re-confirm your "double booking". You can even mention 2nd guest will be coming in latter and if staff ask tell them you will give the 2nd ID as soon as the 2nd guest comes in. - That usually is accepted by the "friendly staff".
