Recently I got an email who claimed to be from a hacker. It was mentioned there that my email ID has been hacked and also told the password of my email. He claimed that a software has been installed in my PC by him while visiting an adult site and his software cannot be detected by any antivirus. Now he got access to all my data and monitoring all my activities from several days. Even If I will change my password, he will still be notified for the same and can continue to track my activities. He also claimed that he has recorded my videos and photos while watching porn and masturbating. Now he is demanding money through Bit-coin if I wish to delete those photos / videos else he will send them to all my contacts. Just to add here that I use Opera Browser in incognito mode with built-in VPN while browsing adult websites.

I deleted that email immediately and disconnected my PC from the internet. Furthermore I run a full system scan of my PC (through Windows inbuilt antivirus) and didn't show presence of any virus / malware in it. I also checked the control panel of my PC and didn't notice any unwanted software which has been recently installed.

Has anyone experienced any such thing in the past? Are they genuine or just an attempt to extract money from someone?

Got similar email. Password was 10 years old one and I know that that password was compromised. Didn't bother at all. I do use porn site + masturbation. But the possibility that someone can record using laptop camera is extremely low (Only big spy agencies have those capability).

Unless someone sends you a copy of some compromising video, there is nothing to worry. Just chill.

There might be ransomeware installed on your computer.

Change your password from some other computer and see he comes to know or not.

If still happens, take the backup of the system and format it.

Do not copy back your data on the same system for a while, see how your system is behaving.

This trend is disturbing. The threshold for declaring someone as a sexual predator / rapist is being lowered. Soon, every man with functioning penis and a sex drive will be labeled as a potential rapist.

Some facts of the case:
