Hi friends,

This is not related to Mumbai forum but still requesting if some one can offer help.

Planning to travel to Bangkok next month. I will carry cash but would like to keep additional option of cash withdrawal from ATM in case of emergency.

Please help me to understand what will be normal charges if I use card issued from India & which would be best option to use for ATM withdrawal.

Would suggest getting the Niyo card (google it, I have used it extensively across 2-3 countries with great results), they have 0% forex charge (at least nothin on top of what Visa charges as standard, the 3-3. 5% others have mentioned is usually on top of Visa / MC exchange rate, so you are basically getting it at 0% Niyo and other Indian debit cards will however have a flat fee per withdrawal as well, so check your card rates before you go. The flat fee makes it better to withdraw larger amounts to avoid the fee through repetitive withdrawals of smaller amounts. You could leave excess cash in hotel safe.

So it's a trade off between higher fee vs. Being left with excess foreign cash, but you can figure that out based on some estimation of your expense requirements.

Indian issued cards work at most of the ATMs. There will be a transaction fees of 220 Baht for every withdrawal you do so it is better to carry cash or withdraw the amount at one go.

Also, some of the Indian banks charge a 3. 5% transaction fees on international withdrawals. This needs to be confirmed with your respective bank.

Most international transactions are at 3% convenience fee. You will be able to transact on prevailing Forex rate. This is not the spot quote that you see on the screen, but the banks Bid / Ask rate for the day. Mostly you can search the Bid Ask for a particular bank for that day online. Very simple way to understand Bid / Ask spread is that while buying or selling whichever rate seems unfavorable to you that is the rate that is applicable to you and the other rate is to the counterparty.

And yes, ensure that your debit card is enabled for international transactions and you should be good to go.
