Hi folks,

A lot of great information in this thread for someone planning a trip. How is the English in Kampala? Outside of Kampala in the countryside? When I approach random chicas for their phone numbers, will they be put off if I try English first? Do the local speak Swahili or Luganda to each other? Is it worth learning basic phrases in one or both of these languages?

My personal opinion is that in Kampala English is spoken better than in Kenya and Tanzania. In office, people spoke English to each other instead of Luganda. Swahili is not spoken so much because of historical reasons, from Idi Amin time, I forget what was reason for that.¨
Also bar girls talk good English, I guess people in this forum are interested of that, not what people speak in office

LOL. Neddy has been the most important contributor on the Afrika forum for probably the last decade. Dig a bit deeper in his previous posts. You could learn something from him.

I think in Kampala it was never there. But for the fearful: A local newspaper now says the end of ebola has come.

On September 20,2022, public health authorities in Uganda announced an outbreak of Ebola fever in Uganda. According to the WHO, a total of 142 cases have been confirmed since the outbreak began. 55 people died. 17 cases were reported from Kampala. The last patient with a confirmed Ebola infection in Uganda left the hospital on November 30, according to local health officials.

According to the definition of the World Health Organization, an Ebola epidemic is over when no new infection occurs for 42 days in a row. So the epidemic ended in mid-January.

SceticoBlu, you should inform yourself better. Ebola cases did exist in Kampala. 17 cases. "I think in Kampala.... " What you think is irrelevant. Only facts are relevant.

I was planning to go to Kampala too. When I was searching where to do my yellow fever vaccination in France the laboratory told me that Ebola virus was back in Kampala and other cities. I checked on the government website if it is right and it seems that it is. For this year I cancelled my trip to Uganda.

It depends. Gesheft is an old senior member who widely traveled in Africa. I believe his story that the pic was scrounged and used by a girl to freshen up her online profile.

So is SceticoBlu who is widely travelled in Africa and whom I know personally. If he doesn't want to divulge the name of the hotel, which is mentioned many times in the Uganda Forum BTW. , that's his business LOL. And rest assured. I have a number of very cosy and cheap places. I don't divulge then as well. Except to very senior members. My network of informers spans over 10 African countries. If I want to know anything it cost me a WhatsApp message. And finally. For the umpteenth time. Booking in Africa is all but useless and overpriced. So is AirBnB. I prefer Agoda. But I never book. When I arrive I head to the hotel I found online and ask for the walk in price in local currency. Whatever is cheaper I use as basis for negotiation.

And finally. The best places are nowhere on the internet.

As long as you not tell us the name we can't check your story is true. For me are the diffenrences to big (80 k to 300 k).

Nice try to make me give the name so I prove my credibility. The big difference is due to the fact 300.000 is astronomic for this place. 80.000 is without negotiating and for one night. In 2018 I paid 30 USD. Do not worry. If you go to Kampala you find places similar to mine for the same price. My place is 80- 90% empty.
And finally. It is not just for a hotel guest to post discouts in a travel forum.
