It's very common. I've always thought it's best to ask them how much for their time, or if they'd like a gift, to get an understanding of expectations. There are a number of girls that don't negotiate and expect payment but far from all. You have to read them a bit. I find it helps to have lunch or coffee and look if she's showing up on her own dime or not, and even how eager she is to move to your place. At la Isla or Fase Dos, you pay the cashier. The girl usually expects a tip for her in the room too. I would not go before about 11 pm as it is dead there before.

Nowadays, if you are new it is better to confirm that is all you need to pay at the casher, and no more payment after. One member reported paying the second time in the room. It's because Immigration uses the airlines as their enforcement vehicle. They get fined a lot and can have landing slots cancelled if they don't comply so they do.
