Agreed. I thought that post about using an ATM with a security guard was strange.

My MO, I bring about a $100 worth of Thai Baht from my home country, order it from the bank so I have THB when I touch down in BKK.

Then on the first or second day I go to one of the many malls, which have banks and I get cash from there as I need it throughout my trip.

I have a Chares Schwab card which reimburses all ATM fees so I can money as needed instead of carrying a ton of cash on me or in the safe at my hotel.

Just a convenience. I appreciate having the vestibule that shields me from passing traffic, rather than an exposed ATM on the street with a lot of passing pedestrian traffic (ala the Chase ATMs at Suk / Asok). But I do appreciate the smile, the Hello, and his opening the door for me. Comes with the territory, just like the Robinson's doorman. (is he still there, the one on the bridge to the BTS...?)

These days, most everywhere has ATM's. But you get out in the sticks, and having to find one can be problematic. Less so now than 10 years ago, but still. And if there's a communications disruption, you can be SOL even if you do find one.

China, having trouble with an ATM, seems it was not happy with my 4 digit PIN when it expected 6 digits. I was so busy trying to figure it out, I didn't realize that those little digits counting down was the expiration timer, and when they reached zero, it ate my card. Of course, just before closing on 30 September which is the night before the MAJOR week long public holiday. And I had "hard to get" train tickets for later that night... (I did have a backup card to another account, but that had atm fees). Luck was with me, along with a KIND bank manager who, on her own initiative, contrary to SOP, got the key, opened the ATM, and on showing my passport, returned my ATM card. Lesson learned, and whenever I see a countdown timer, I eject my card way before it reaches zero. Traveling 101.

Personally, my plan is always be ready for the ultimate: two gogo girl threesome, top level girl at a Petchaburi Parlour or a sudden trip to a gentlemans club, or that "got to have her no matter the cost". My number on that could be 25 k. This, multiple trips to ATM if I don't like to carry that much in that in my pocket, especially when I'm smoking tons of weed.

Given that I never pay in advance, RTB to access the ammo dump really isn't a problem as that is the ultimate destination anyway; direct flight, non-stop.

Myself, coming up on 30 years of BKK entertainment, I know where I can get MY kicks. Personally, I much preferred the previous incarnation of Thermae, back when it was the several rooms, low ceilings, death trap if ever a fire broke out, but a TRUE Star Wars bar around 2 AM. One of those places where you tell your running buddy "If I ever look like that, kill me."

And while SOL/MTW might not be for everyone, when your best friend says he wants to buy you a beer and a bj, that IS a memory that lasts for decades, fun to reminisce, even when they're gone.

I don't look for armed guards at ATM's (he's not, but he IS kind enough to open the door for me and say hello, and it is a job for him). Just so happens that's what IS there at the bank most convenient for me.

Have you ever tried Tokyo's bj bars? Sleazy rocking time. I would stop in Tokyo again just to get a bj in that sleazy environment. Plus Tokyo and Japan are interesting outside of the sex scene. People are more relaxed in SE Asia though.

Not only that (Schwab) I have an account at ABA Bank in Cambodia, an account at Krungsri and a Wise account and card. My Wise card is linked to Grab so I never have to fork out cash for rides.

How's that for "planning"? Saves me the trouble of looking for the armed guards at the ATMs. This is Thailand, not Columbia or the Dominican Republic. Or even the USA. It's so nice to be able to go out at 4:00 am And not have to pack a 1911.

Who carries large sums around? The ammo dump is at the base. You carry enough ammo for the expected battle plus some extra for contingencies. Carrying more just makes you a fat appealing target.

Myself, I'm just a binary sort: 1's and 0's, yes or no. If one says no, there's always another. My ego is not that fragile that it'll be crushed by a "no" and I'd need to feel vindictive enough to flash some cash. I get my amusements in other ways. I'll leave it to the girl I do pull to spread the word, and they do talk. If you're more than a one-of visitor, the girls will know who the players are. My experience anyway.

Now I will say, I DO find it amusing when a new girl asks me how long I've been in (fill-in-the-blank). Is this the name of the place? I have never been. I thought I knew all of the BjBars. Blow and go. lol

MTW is on Patpong Soi 2, upstairs.

There are a couple of ways to get there. Both start out walking away from Silom towards Surawong. Walk past Foodland (on your right) and past SOL (RIP). Skip the stairs going up in front of SOL, and stay "outside" on the street, not "inside" under the arcade.

Easy way for my lapses of memory: I can never remember which staircase up, so I just walk to the last staircase, the one before the Pink bar. Go up the staircase, turn RIGHT.

Slightly more direct way: the staircase AFTER the SOL staircase. Go up and turn LEFT. You'll be SLIGHTLY closer to MTW, but it's a minimal difference. I usually take the above just because it's a no brainer.

In the photos: leftmost is the "last stairs-turn right at top", then "Middle stairs-turn left at top", finally "Meet the World sign" (top of the photo, white print on black). MTW is the white bar.
