It happens in many countries and is even official. I went to the main museum in Kolkata, India and I was behind a line of Indians who entered free of charge and I was asked to pay. Same happened at the Victoria memorial in that city and there are probably many other tourist sites with similar payment rules, I suppose you can either pay up or make an about turn.

Concerning "civvies" and 7/11 girls in Pattaya, many are former bar girls. You may not find that out immediately.

My answer is "as long as I can remember" (and that is as long ago as 30 years and as recently as 6 years).

This is based on first-hand experience; that is, knowing the Thais who have visited Cowboy with me. Also, some upper middle / lower "high class" Khmer dudes. One held a Secretary position in the Thaksin Adminstration. (And, I don't mean a "clerk-typist. LOL) Another was a Thai whose father was the Thai Ambassador to a European country.) Another, an assistant professor at a well-known Thai uni. The Khmer were very successful entrepeneurs and government officials in Cambodia.

Generalizations aside, can be very difficult to really know whether a person is Thai, Khmer, or even Filipino. Even among those groups, they can have difficulty in identifying nationality just by appearance.

Now, in only one case did any of them barfine a "dancer". They were just curious about the scene and all thoroughly enjoyed the evenings. In the one case when one of the Thais did barfine, the mamasan explained that the girl could not be seen leaving with him. He was told that the girl could have a boyfriend in the area and it could make for a problem. She did not want to set a precedent. (Maybe the boyfriend would think she was going to get a lower payment. Ha ha ha) I should note that he did choose a "stunner"; what you might call "the pick of the litter". LOL.

In the handful of occasions of which I speak, not once were my Thai or Khmer friends refused entry or service or ignored by the girls at the biggest and "best" bars on Cowboy.

If you read someone stating: "Whether you like it or not if you go to the swamp you will be bitten by mosquitoes" are you going to conclude that the writer is ok being bitten by mosquitoes?

No one likes to pay more than another for the same thing but lets not allow anxiety about overpaying to get the better of us.

Well firstly you are clearly suggesting we just accept defeat.

In response I will always low ball the shit out of them and find other ways to undercut their cheating ie.

Buy way less drinks or zero, whenever possible cut the bar out of the equation, and never ever tip the hookers.

Constantly look for ways to offset the fuckery of their cheating and scamming, that's what I do ie.

NEWSFLASH: You're not in Kansas anymore. Many of your preconceived western ideas of right and wrong, discrimination, business plans, and equal opportunity should be forgotten as soon as you enter Thailand. Different pricing for Thais and foreigner is a well accepted policy at various parks, private beaches, and businesses, why would that policy not be extended to hookers?

I don't know how things are really supposed to be, I just report what I see and experience.

So these guys and gals seemed cool with me having my fun even more than the other mongers. Yes, it was a bit strange. I didn't check their IDs, but I did talk to them for a minute or two. One group was upstairs in Kink. If I remember correctly, they were two women, and two men (with one of the men not really talking to me, he moved away). One of the waitresses also confirmed they were Thai as we were talking and they were ordering the drinks for me, themselves and one or two girls at the same time. A day or two later I bumped into one of the women off Buakhao (I'm 90% sure), she waved to me and smiled, which creeped me out a bit. She was sitting behind the wheel of an SUV. So I don't think it's a stretch to assume she and her friends were rich by Thai standards.

The other group was in Coco a gogo off Walking Street, the club with the all-white decorations and lights. They were definitely spending on the drinks and girls, and the drink for me. I asked them about their nationality too. Then there was a third group, but I can't recall where, as I kind of got used to the idea. And I did see similar mixed-sex Asian groups a few times more from afar, though I can't be sure if they were all Thai.

Two years ago there was a 50-year old Thai man (or so he told me) upstairs in Kink, he told me he came out of curiosity, and he was encouraging me strongly to do some naughty stuff with the girls. That creeped me out too, as he spoke good English, and seemed fit in a way consistent with an army officer or policeman (he kept very straight etc.) And the club was half-empty. Call me paranoid, but I decided not to push my luck back then.
