I'm a higher end (Marriott) hotel guy myself. JW Marriott in BKK (just booked in January), Renaissance in HK, and I do the Tokyo Marriott. I'm sure others here can give better Tokyo hotel suggestions and help simplify the subway system (I only had to learn about 2 lines for the two times I"ve been there. Yamanote and Keikyu). Pick your hotel first, then worry about learning the subway lines.

As at David032 said, translators aren't that big a deal with most of the places that service foreigners. Most of the girls will have some basic English skills and some are incredibly proficient. Honestly don't worry about getting around. Google maps will give you great directions it even tell you exactly which platform number to look for. Also taxis are everywhere.

As for translators your experiences will vary. If you go for some of the forgien friendly ones mentioned here, gfesoapland, henti, shadymotion asian mistque, they will all be fine with it. I have yet to have an issue with translators yet.

It all depends on your preference as purely a punter trip Thailand wins hands down. As a tourist / punter trip Japan wins for me personnelly. Japan generally does take a little more effort as you've more than likely read as FS isn't exactly legal. Put there are quite a few places that bridge that. I've mongered pretty much all of Asia (SE anyway. Thai, Phil, Cambodia, Vietnam, Bali). Have not been to Japan; I understand the nuisance of the law (no vaginal). I've read the threads.
