Posts: 2942Well, they only need a handful, nothing large scale. RacShack came back and clarified his original post. They didn't arrest 200 chicas:

Posts: 2449Makes for interesting conversation, we all care about our favorite bar, hotel, restaurant or the main venues that attract the chicas.

I've seen the on again and off again crackdowns on covering the bar windows, chicas entering a bar alone, strolling alone, not wearing a moto helmet, and the monthly round up of hookers, especially the Haitians. Bars are closed and then re-opened as if nothing happened.
Fact is Sosua runs on prostitution, and without it, it would be just another La Union, Abajo or Charamichos barrio.
The folks who really run Sosua won't let all that dinero disappear.
If they really wanted change they could simply declare Sosua a "Re-development Zone", and pass a bylaw against prostitution. Throw a couple mongers in jail and Bingo! Cuba here we come!
So relax, we'll all be having this conversation again next year like we had it last year, and the year before.

Posts: 2803Don't you think large scale arrests would have to be approved ahead of time by the hierarchy, due to the amount of resources needed?

Posts: 2803No I didn't write that I don't find the women of Sosua to be attractive, I said that I don't find the vast majority of the girls attractive, but that I have always been able to find one or two that I was sufficiently attracted to, which is all that one needs. RTFF, please.

For example if you say "I have a bit of a fetish for really skinny girls, and when I did eventually find one I liked the look of, her personality was dull and her performance in bed was hopeless. All the rest of the girls I saw were too fat to sexually excite me, so I decided I might as well spend my money on a ticket change rather than spend it on girls who had no appeal to me, and thus cut my losses on hotel bills and paid vacation time", this would at least send out a warning to those who shared your tastes.
BTW, a comparison of a BMW and a Kia does not seem very relevant, because a BMW is an expensive luxury high performance German car, and a Kia is about the cheapest brand of car you can buy, so it isn't just a question of personal taste, as most people would prefer a BMW over a Kia if the price was the same.

This happened two weeks ago when a few guys were arrested filming a fully clothed model in Sosua. Not trying to scare folks just reporting the news.
Sosúa, Puerto Plata -. They were arrested by the National Police a group of tourists who allegedly recorded one xxx film in that municipality.
The incident occurred Thursday afternoon when a group of African Americans to take pictures of a beautiful model hanging in the rubble of the old restaurant located in the area Rocca Batey, Sosúa.
Although it was not naked exhibited his skills while cameramen doing their job. Many onlookers filled the street corner Pedro Clisante. Including children, a situation that drew the attention of a patrol of the National Police.
All were arrested and are expected to know if they had permits the Mayor and the Dom.

Even if they are checking phones, what can they possibly charge you with. I don't think it's illegal to have any kind of nude pics or pictures.

And the key thrown away, that's just wrong!
Just my 2 cents; stay safe everyone.

Posts: 2942I think this is not talked about enough: motive. I think it is safe to assume that if you are an underpaid Police officer in Sosua and you have the power to arrest a bunch of chicas and tell them "Your get out of jail free card tonight is sucking and fucking", you might be inclined to exercise that power, no?

Some of them have families to feed and would never be able to pay 2000-3000 pesos for some prime ass. Why not blackmail chicas by locking them up and making them pay with their ass to be set free? You'd go home with your balls drained every night as long as you caught some chicas slipping.
Another reason why, during my last trip to Sosua in 2012, you NEVER EVER EVER saw any of the dime chicas (8's, 9's, 10's) strolling the strip at night. When I was standing in line at Classicos, all of those bad-ass top-notch-looking chicas took a moto right up to the front door of the place. They were not risking getting arrested and blackmailed by the cops.
All those nasty, unattractive, "fat" chicas you see guys here complaining about that they see strolling the strip have nothing to lose. They may make some money, or they may not. If they get locked up and have to fuck in order to be set free, then that's the chance they take trying to earn some pesos.
Those 8's, 9's, and 10's know they will make their money and then some just in a couple of hours in Classicos. They don't need to spend all evening strolling the strip.

Posts: 5608What stops them is money. They might try it for a few days, but it won't last. After dealing with a few belligerent tourists, the police will decide they aren't getting paid enough for this crap. Arresting the chicas is one thing, they can at least expect to get something out of it, but I doubt if that will last. Sosua needs the tourist dollars. Take away the star attraction and the dollars fly away.

Posts: 7751Not without consequences. Put a chica in jail who do they have to answer too. But throw a foreigner in jail somebody from the embassy of the case are at least going to check on them. Throw enough of them in jail it will make it onto the web and eventually a major news outlet will report on it. Besides you can get yourself out of that situation very easily if you handle yourself correctly. A chica has no form of back up whatsoever. But the rumor is every single one of them can get out of jail with a 1500 DOP bribe (ahem, I meant to say fine).

Posts: 2942I would say the main difference is Dominican Citizen vs. Tourists. From most of what I've learned about the DR over the years, it seems like they have no problem shitting on their own people (like throwing chicas in jail for no reason). Most guys travel there in packs. If a group of 10 guys decided they are not going to show the police their cell phone, I'm going to safely say they are not taking all of them to jail.

That's going to bring a lot of unwanted attention, especially for a place heavily dependent on tourism. All it will take is for a few guys who are not there for sex tourism getting thrown in jail by the police and it turns out they are well connected on the island and back in their home country for heads to start to roll.
Normally I agree with you Mani, but on this one I will call BS. But if and when the first story pops up here about it happening, I will be the first to admit I was wrong.

Posts: 7751As a practical matter how are the police going to check your phone if you keep it locked. Are they going to ask you to give them the code? On what basis? If you refuse to give them the code are they going to seize your phone? Or will they arrest you for failing to follow a lawful police order? Even if that happens your phone is still locked. From a simple public relations standpoint, it wouldn't be a very good policy. And this entire push is about public relations and a desire to reallocate capital and change the flow of income. I don't see how the police could institute such a policy if you were not doing anything illegal to begin with. And prostitution is still legal in the Dominican Republic.

Posts: 2655They throw dozens of chicas in jail every night for no reason whatsoever, what is stopping them for doing the same thing to a gringo that refuses to "cooperate" with them, I could see it happening.

Posts: 2942I can't see how the authorities would even pull this off. They literally would have to be stopping guys in the street and patting them down to see if they have a cell phone on them, and them ask them to unlock their phone, and navigate to their photo albums. I doubt most of the Police know how to operate most of the variations of smart phone out there.

I would chalk this one up to just a very bad rumor that your friend heard.
