Actually this is true for anything from pork bellies to bitcoin. Reading your post I think the real lesson is not to use leverage in any buys, even a car, except in a home purchase. Which really isn't a purchase in the same way as other purchases. Because you have to live somewhere. Rent or buy same same but different.
