The term "drink only girls" is taken from the Pattaya thread, but in Isaan I think it's the majority of girls in the hostess bars. I haven't bar-fined anyone in about 8 bar visits. These are girls who sit and talk with you while you buy them a drink for typically 150 Baht and they make about 90 Baht from that (it varies), but you can't bar-fine them. However, flirting is fun, you get a small dopamine hit talking to a pretty young girl, it's cheap, you practice your conversational Thai, and there's always the hope that she'll make an exception. I got phone numbers from two of these girls. One ignored me, and the other contacted me periodically for simple small talk until a couple months later she asked me for a loan to pay for a hospital and sent pictures of herself in a hospital bed. I politely declined and said I was sorry that she was ill.

There are various reasons they may be drink-only. The bars in Isaan have a small staff, so the bar manager maybe can't afford to let the girl leave the bar (be bar-fined), whereas in Pattaya there are plenty of staff to spare. I estimate the girls can make 4,000 to 8,000 Baht per month on ladydrinks, which is not too bad for this region. So, maybe they're happy with a modest income and to not have to do the dirty work? Of course, there's always the possibility that they don't like me, but I'm an optimist and assume that's not the case. We do have to be careful with these optimistic self assessments, though. Studies show that 84% of men think they are above average, which is impossible. But we men have to be optimistic, or nothing fun will ever happen. As for the other 16%, that's a sad bunch indeed.

Was in Udon Thani recently. Same as a previous trip, walking out of the Banbua and making a left turn, the ladies at the very first massage shop you come to are eager to do business.

On my first day I passed by the shop and an older lady. Maybe late 40's or early 50's asked if I would like a massage. I told her "tomorrow" with a smile. There was a younger lady sitting next to her maybe in her late 20's, fairly cute, who also greeted me with a big smile.

Next day I passed by the same shop in the morning, maybe 10 am. Same older lady said, "massage. Not tomorrow, today". I showed her a message in Thai that read, "If you have a lady who can come to my room at Banbua for a special massage in 30 minutes, I can do". Lady smiled and agreed.

30 minutes later I heard a knock on my hotel room door. I opened it up and it was the older lady. She was no beauty queen, but had a rock solid, slender, hard body. I was expecting the younger lady thinking the older lady was only a mamasan. I invited her in. Immediately she said, "Take off all your clothes". I obliged. She went to the toilet and came out wearing only a towel. She asked if I wanted a massage. I told her, "I only want you".

She quickly began going down on junior with a very nice BBBJ. It was incredible. Then. Unprompted - she swung her legs around my neck for me to oblige her kitty. A very nice, long 69. She then proceeded to ride me vigorously for a long time. Not wanting to finish too fast, I insisted on taking a short break, then laid her on her side for a nice long finish. I wouldn't have guessed it beforehand, but it ended up being quite a great experience. So much so that I invited her back the next morning. The next morning, after the deed, I said, "See you tomorrow". Not really thinking much about it.

The third morning I was tired and decided not to pass by the shop. Was just hanging out in my room with the Do Not Disturb sign hanging outside the door, then heard a knock at the door. I opened the door and it was the older lady and the younger lady standing outside the door. I invited the older lady inside the room and asked her why she came to my room unannounced. She told me that I had said, "See you tomorrow". I informed her I was not interested at the moment. It startled me a little. So I did not return to the shop.

But if you are in need of early morning activity, this shop will definitely take care of you in your place or inside their shop.

The Moogata in Bangkok set me back $60 AYCE with some alleged Wagyu beef and couple beers. 2 girls were cooking for me but prices, food and selection were not as good as Bestbeef on Sukhumvit On Nut.

Udon Thani is worth a side trip.

I've been in Udon Thani for a few days now. This Isaan city is much quieter than the bustling Bangkok and the notorious Pattaya. While it doesn't offer the same quantity or quality as its bigger sisters, you can still find what you're looking for if you take your time. However, the level of English here is very low, so it's necessary to know at least some basic Thai.

The spots mentioned earlier are still relevant. Lady drinks are 150 baht, and afterward, you can negotiate with the girl (barfine is 500 baht). Kong Siam bar is now closed, but next door, the Wolfeverine nightclub is open from 9:30 PM to 2:00 AM. They have live Thai and English music, followed by a DJ after midnight. You'll meet lots of groups of girls there just looking to party. It's possible to make contact near the restrooms for a quieter conversation. That said, I found the girls to be quite young.

You have plenty of massage on the streets for 300 bath /1 h. If women call you from the shop it's mean they will offer you an happy ending.

I'll be spending Christmas Eve at the Centara Hotel—if anyone happens to be passing through town.

I respectfully disagree with Explorer. Udon Thani is one of my favorite destinations. It is not expensive. Stay at Panarrai Hotel for $30 (or less) a night, or better yet, Banbua Grand for $40 a night.

I sometimes stay at Centara because I like that it is located directly by the huge shopping mall and still walkable to the bars (five minutes).

Barfines at every bar is 500 baht, sometimes less if it is late in the evening. You can find ST for 1000 at almost every bar. LT 2000 - 3000 baht. Go to Country Bar if you don't need the 23 year old spinner. Ladies there are told by the boss never to ask customers for drinks. It's chill. Very laid back. I will take Udon Thani and Hua Hin any day over Bangkok. I can't comment on Day and Night because its always too loud in there for me. I prefer the smaller bars on the main drag. The ratio of ladies per farang is usually outstanding.

Now there are bars there that will try to take advantage of you. Meeting Place is one. The chubby Mamasan there always asks customers to purchase her drinks. I would not go to Meeting Place.

Full Throttle bar (after dark), Dollar Bar are other places I've had success for bottom of the barrel rates.

Is Udon Thani a mongering destination? Compared to Pattaya and Bangkok, no. But for a laid back vibe and easy, affordable access, it is great.

This is great feedback as I would love to visit Udon on my next trip to Thailand. One question I would have is in terms of quality of girls, how does the scene in Udon Thani compare to Hua Hin?

Sorry, I've been neglectful.

First, it's been a few month so my memory might be a little off.

Stayed at the White Inn, it was about 700 Baht a night for a simple room. Very good location and lots of parking.

Going prices were 300-500 Baht BF and 1500-2000 Baht LT. No great beauties, most ladies were well pass their prime.

Bit of a change in demographics, not as many Lao ladies working. They are normally the young and better looking ladies.

Bars averaged 4-5 ladies, maybe around 10-12 bars on White Inn street.

Passed by all the bars around 10 pm and only saw 3-4 ladies that looked in their 20's.

Fun trip, but not high on a repeat visit.

I live in a small town in Isaan. I prefer the quiet and calm of the place. If you're interested in Pattaya-style fun, you can find pockets of it in bigger towns. Do a google search for "night life in XXX", where XXX is the town of interest (for example XXX = Udon Thani). There you will find links to YouTube videos or various websites which describe the scene. Of course, you also have the guide you are currently reading. But for a small town like mine you won't find much -- neither action nor information.

Three possible resources: 1) Thai Friendly (TF), 2) discos, 3) massage parlors (MP). On TF, the women in Isaan are mostly looking for serious relationships. I know a few Westerners who went this route (not necessarily TF, but online) and found wives. Some other Westerners reported going to discos and even at age 60 they harvested phone numbers from local girls. Personally, I feel like I don't belong in discos, but I thought I'd pass that along in case you want to try it. You can search for the locations of discos in a map app. Similarly, you can search in a map app for "massage near me". There are a lot of MP, even in a small town. There are basically 2 kinds of MP: "straight" massage where you only get a massage like a foot massage; and MP where "more" is offered. The easiest way to tell is to simply ask the staff. But another way to tell is from the format of the place. If you find a number of massage mats next to each other with no privacy, it's straight. If the girl leads you to a private room, they are likely to proposition you for a "special" massage.

After interacting with several of the massage women, I can report some things. Massage is typically 500 Baht or less, and including the "special" the total is 2000 to 2500 Baht. It's pretty much what you get in Pattaya. There is a lot of turnover of the staff. I rarely see the same woman a second time. In my small town, most of the staff is in their 30's (and even older than that for the straight MP), but occasionally you find someone in her 20's and very pretty. They generally don't speak English. I found that the women tend to travel around; I suppose it's less risky to her reputation to not work in her home town. Also, some of they women complain that they make no money in my small town and declare that they won't return. I took the phone number of one young, slender woman and whenever she passes through town (once a month) on the way to a bigger market like Khon Kaen she rents a cheap hotel for one night and invites me over for a short visit. I pay for the hotel and give her a little extra (total 4000) to reward her. I guess I could get away with a lower price, but we have a lot of fun, she is very pretty, and she has a great attitude, so it's worth it to me. I prefer being a regular because it's less risky and because the woman opens up after she learns to trust you.

Udon Thani is rather a big city within Isaan, though pretty quiet during daytimes. There are quite a few retired expats living in and around Udon.

Depending of what you're seeking, Udon Thani is a nice destination for some culture (more authentic Thailand in my opinion, but bigger distances to cover), but also for mongering. Aren't most girls in the South coming from Isaan? Let's check out at the source.

The bars are supposed to close at midnight, saw police passing by a couple of times, but the nice thing is that they usually remain open until you're good to go. They just put the volume of the music down. The thing which I like about Udon is people are less pushy compared to Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, .

Stayed at the Pannarai hotel, the Old in and Eight Hotel. Breakfast usually at 'the morning house' - Hotels as well as 'the morning house' are very good value for money!!

I'd like to add on thing to the above. Why is it a miss for me? When they stay busy on their phones. Sometimes looks like it's glued to the hand.

Thanks for the report. Glad you had a good time. Heading there soon. Have dropped in most of the bars on your list, but haven't been to the Vikings bar yet. Maybe will drop in next time. For those who love Bangkok and Pattaya, Udon is not a place for them. But for those who enjoy the slow paced life and easy going Thais, Udon is a great place to be for a while.
