A universal language indeed but your comparing apples to oranges in that El Centro in my opinion is far more dangerous than the red light districts I visited in Saigon. And as your aware besides French more English is spoken in Vietnam than in Colombia.

If you mean one in the areas on my map, they take you close to a short term hotel upstairs, all the ones I have been in were nice enough. Not sure how it would work with out some Spanish. I suppose you could write down numbers or use google translate but you will look like a fish out of water. With no Spanish I would stick to the casa's and strip clubs, that would be safer, a gringo with no Spanish on the street scream's "Papaya" (fruit to be plucked in Colombian slang).

A taxi from Santa Fe to downtown is about 10, but not 10 dollars. It's 10 mil COP, which is less than $3. 50.

You don't need to know any Spanish to use the Metro. From Santa Fe, you can walk to the Aguacatala station during the day. The Metro tickets are less than 3 mil. Go to the ticket booth and tell the agent "dos", or hold up two fingers. Give them 10 mil and they will give you a card that looks similar to a credit card, and your change from the 10 mil. Go to the turnstile and hold your card in front of the reader, then go through the turnstile. If you only have one trip left on your card, you must put it in a slot reader instead of holding it in front of the reader. Once through the turnstile, you have two choices, Niquia or La Estrella. You want to go towards Niquia. Get off at the Parque Berrio stop. When returning to Santa Fe, go towards La Estrella. Using the buses is a little more difficult because you must figure out what bus to get on. If you can find the correct bus, then get on and pay the driver. I think the fare on most routes now is 2100 COP. There is an oval sticker on the windshield listing the fare.

I echo those who advise both caution and encouragement re: Medellin. You should feel encouraged to visit. But you should always be cautious as a foreigner. Especially in a place like Medellin with evolving political / social norms. Your goal should be to go under-the-radar wherever you are. That means: dressing modestly and in-line w / the locals (save the flashy, trendy designer clothes for Miami or NYC) - don't go out wearing Prada sunglasses, blinged out watches, and snap-chatting on an iPhone X in el centro. Regardless of what time it is (but if you do this at night. You're tempting fate).

A lot of people get in trouble for not exercising common sense: they get a little too confident which leads to arrogance and start having el jefe fantasies where they feel like they are untouchable. You're very touchable, and just one wrong move from getting into a predicament where you bite off more than you can chew. You should also know that it's distasteful to overtly gawk and approach younger local women if you're an older gringo. It's frowned upon by the locals and you're putting a target on your back. Unless you're a veteran and have years under your belt in Medellin. Keep it simple: Be tasteful, be discreet, respect the local culture, stay low-key and abide by the local laws, always.
