From reading ISG the best destination for mongering today is Medellin, Colombia followed by Brazil and Mexico. Before the pandemic also up there were Thailand, the Phillipines, Indonesia, Germany. All are capitalist countries. There is not one socialist / communist country that has good mongering.

Well, it depends for who. On ISG, we read about the destinations where ISG members go. Who are the ISG members? It's the world seen from a specific standpoint. I can well understand that the average gringo has a harder mongering life in Vietnam or in PRC, but locals and semi-locals enjoy more there than a gringo in Colombia.

Yes -- you are staying in a safe area that has a good police presence due to tourism. My suggestion is to visit casas during the day. Plug the addresses into your uber app.

The casas are safe, efficient and cheap. Quality fluxuates but you can also find diamonds.

At night check out Gustos and the strip clubs which are pricer but safe.

Where you stay is not what you should be considering so much in deciding whether to visit Medellin as you can just as easily be robbed in Poblado as in El Centro. You should be looking at how you monger, and sounds like you have ruled out El Centro. So the next question is, do you speak Spanish, if not things will be more difficult for you, especially having incall at an Airbnb or dealing with girls working LLeras or other venues like Fayboo. The language barrier has been discussed here many times and makes a gigantic difference, although others will disagree. Lots of first timers with no Spanish speaking skills just stay at the Mansion, and have everything spoon fed to them at a price, and that might be an option for you. Other guys just make casa / club runs, no Spanish skills necessary, so that might work for you.

So your question was, "is Medellin still relatively safe to visit as a gringo? And the answer is yes and no. Given the current state of affairs with the protests and the Pandemic, if I was like a financial advisor, albeit in this case a "monger advisor" I honestly would not advise anyone one who has never been here before and no Spanish speaking skills to wait and see.
