Here are the official stats on robberies, a person is 3 times as likely to get robbed in El Centro as they are in Laureles or Poblado but that does not mean you are exempt in Laureles or Poblado it just means it is less likely to happen there. The most likely way is as described in this article and that has been described in posts here in this forum, It is by the passenger of a motorcycle. I think they actually have term for these guys in Colombia but I cannot remember what it is. Looking at just Laureles and Poblado the stats average out to be like 5 per day that means 15 per day in El centro on the average - so like Nounce said robbery can happen anywhere -

According to this other article the motorcycle rider thing started as a means for hitman (a method that is still around) of the Escobar cartel (it also says that the person who thought of it was eventually assassinated in the same way) so that it would be easier to evade the police through traffic, but also robbers caught on to this method, In 2014 Medellin even passed an ordinance banning male passengers of certain age group on the back of motorcycles. "motorcycle assassinations decreased by 39 percent, Robberies of cars and of motorcycles by motorcycle riders each fell by nearly 30 percent. " I do not know if that law is still in effect.

If you have nothing with you, you have nothing. They can search you. You give them what you have. 50k for example, without any resistance, you show your pockets are empty and it's over. If you go there with your phone and 1 million, then they will pretend your phone and 1 million, but if you have 20 k for the taxi, they will take what you have. I don't speak that way. There is literally not a single time of the day when I haven't been walking in Medellin. I've walked from El Centro to Laureles after 10 pm. I've walked the length of Poblado after 4 am. I've walked around carrying 6 million pesos (furniture shopping) along with my $1,000 laptop. I've walked Bello, Manrique and Paris. I averaged 50 miles walking a week for a year. I have no problems walking around or being out after 6 pm.

You don't seem to understand how robberies work in Medellin.

2 guys come around the corner on a motorcycle and see someone walking alone. They stop. The passenger is already pointing a gun at you. As he approaches you, the driver pulls a gun. If you run, they shoot. If you don't immediately start handing stuff over, they shoot. They don't spend 5 minutes negotiating or searching you. 5 seconds after the motorcycle stops, it's driving away. You're either standing there with empty pockets, or you're lying there bleeding. If they have knives instead of guns, the results are the same.

It's hard to find a chica who hasn't been robbed multiple times. It's hard to find a chica who doesn't know someone who was killed by the robbers. They get killed for 1 of 2 reasons. Either they resisted, or they had nothing to steal.

You seem not to understand the situation. You are not a Colombian. Everyone in Colombia knows you aren't a Colombian. If you're in El Centro and you're not a Colombian, everyone knows you have money. Even if you're just walking around with 50 k and no phone, they know you have money.

Now you're facing 2 guys with guns or knives, they're panicked, because they know they need to get your money and get out quick and you expect them to listen calmly while you explain why you're only carrying 50 k? That's like going to Pamplona and explaining to the bulls that you don't eat meat.

If you want to go walking the deserted streets of El Centro after midnight, just to prove your point, at least carry enough to keep from getting killed.

I have seen with my own eyes down the Metro Prado a guy approached from the back by two thugs. They paired him from both sides suddenly, kept him, took everything, pushed him away. I think they had a knife, but I did not approach to know more.
In such a case, I would not resist and I would let them take anything they find.
Note that people around did not do anything, just commented "ladrones..."

I am traveling to Medellin on Wednesday. So I did not want to deal with the drama of having a COVID test that was sent out to a lab. Having to hope I get the results back in time. So I managed to find a CVS in Orlando (about 45 minutes away) that had the rapid molecular test. I called the COVID 19 hotline for CVS and they assumed me if is a PCR test, not an antigen test. So I went and got my test today and 15 minutes later I was told I was negative. However, when I looked at the results that were sent to me, it described a "MOLECULAR POCT" test. From my understanding, a PCR test is a molecular test. But since the results says "POCT" and not "PCR" I suspect that the test will not be accepted. So, I've made another appointment with CVS for the PCR test that goes to the lab and once again I'll be waiting to see if I get my results in time. Very frustrating. What I've found is that most of the folks who give these tests are not very knowledgeable (and the web pages do not always give you clear information). So you really have to pay attention. Ugh.

So a PCR test is a RNA genetic test. Anything that says they tested for multi ways is usually a PCR test it may have included the rapid test too. POCT means the samples weren't tested on site where they were collected but an accredited lab its an insurance a and government payout.

Doesn't always work that way, I know of two gringos where the assailants walked up to them and tried to slit holes in their pants pocket with nothing being said. Neither one of them got cut or hurt and were able to run away, albeit both of them were obvious gringos and stuck out like a sore thumb with a big "X" on their backs.

It's amazing how many people assume that robberies must come down that way, face to face with some kind of discussion. They might just whip his ass, rifle his pockets, pull off his shoes and his socks, and if nothing, kick him in the head for good measure as they have to go find another victim. Some people should have their passports detained for their own protection.

These things generally happen extremely quickly. I've witnessed two muggings in Centro and the thing was 10 seconds or less. No real time to react.

Don't forget to fill out the questionnaire on the Colombia Health Minister site the day before you travel. I forgot about it until I was in Panama. Hastily, I filled it out a little over an hour before I arrived in Medellin, and it was accepted.

I saw a map once of the street gangs, and the higher level gangs that control the street gangs. For Medellin. There were hundreds of street level gangs, and a number of higher level organizations they may have to answer to. They don't generally want wars. That gets too much attention, as in the past with Escobar, etc. But one offs are not a problem. You don't want to be one of those. You tell someone to f off. Maybe they understand you maybe they don't. But they get the picture. But you do that to the wrong one. You're dead. They don't have any problem at all with that.
