Posts: 4439The Centro strip clubs are decent alternatives within the price range and they are safer than plaza after dark.

Common knowledge for the last few years has been avoid Tinder due to scope queens. But I'm rebuilding my FB roster after lots of retirements and it's been harder than I remember. Lots of locked profiles where I can't even see the girl's face. The girls who are not hiding their pics are not that attractive. Is Tinder now a legit avenue for P4P? I've seen some success stories recently for the app.

Posts: 1960I saw an obvious tourist get mugged in plain daylight between Hotel Nutibara and Conejitas on the North Side of the plaza. Loads of people around and it seemed I was the only one that even noticed. The whole thing took like 10 seconds.

Posts: 59I can understand the sentiment, but Medellin is arguably heaven on earth for the average single man who's not broke.

Posts: 18497Go back to Botero. Lightning does not strike the same place twice, plus you already know what to look out for.

Posts: 1076I am referring to point of sale. I have never used, and would never use, a credit card in an ATM.

So massive drug rings get busted up now they can focus on the easy money of robbing tourists either directly or through scope scams.
Look at the post directly below the dude said he was robbed a while back and just reported it now.
So for the average traveling monger I would give Medellin a miss and if I had to come to Colombia I'the go to Cartagena which relies on tourists much more heavily and this more secure.
Hope this Helps.
Trip.

Posts: 1224Is It Time To Abandon Medellin?
With all the crap that has been going on in Medellin from the scop druggings, to robberies, to hassles at the airport immigration lines, do many of you feel that it's finally time to abandon Medellin for other destinations whether they might be other cities in Colombia or other Latin American countries like Brazil? For me, I've had two trips to Medellin and had no issues since I'm able to manage safety fairly well but after visiting both Rio and Sao Paulo this year, I'm really thinking whether or not that's it for me as far as Medellin is concerned. What about you guys?

Posts: 282Almost robbed near Plaza Botero
This happened some time ago. Around sunset, I was walking north along Cra 53 and I was thinking about turning a corner and going east on Calle 51 into the actual plaza. However I noticed that the plaza was already quite empty so I didn't think it was worth exploring. At that time, a guy started to approach me from the front, I turned around to try to get back to Cra 53 but another guy came up from behind, put me in a choke hold and the guy in the front started reaching for my pockets. Thankfully I was already back on Cra 53, where there were plenty of people. A bystander, a big burly Colombian dude came and yelled at both of the thieves and they ran off. I grabbed a taxi and GTFO'd. First, I didn't think it was very risky since there were still plenty of people there at the time, but some thieves are brazen enough to make a move like that, betting that no one would step in. I think I got lucky, because there was no guarantee that someone would step in and help. In hindsight, I should have probably avoided that entire area any time close to sunset.
This story sets up my question. Are there any sources of budget friendly girls after sunset that is relatively safe? Parque Lleras isn't cheap and the girls are gringo hunters. In fact at the current exchange rate, 400 mil for basic service from a Lleras girl is more expensive than the same level of independent girls in Sao Paulo and SP offers much better safety, and arguably a bit better overall quality.

Posts: 4439When you say "use" are you referring to debit purchases (point of sale)? Based on my experience, any merchant that accepts debit cards accepts the new Capital One debit cards. The problem I've had, and I think the problem the original poster is referring to, is ATM acceptance. I haven't found an ATM in Colombia that accepts the new Capital One card.

I just did some quick research that revealed that as of mid-2026, Capital One is still in the process of transitioning all of its cards over to the Discover network, which is what I thought. Right now, they're a mix of MasterCard, Visa, and Discover processed cards, with new cards being issued using the Discover network exclusively. The goal is for all card activity to be eventually processed using the Discover payment network. So, if you're an existing card holder, a reason you may not have had any problems is because you have one of the old cards still on either the MasterCard or Visa network. Do your cards have MasterCard or Visa logos on them? When all Capital One cards are transitioned over to the Discover payment network, it's not that all of a sudden they won't be accepted at all anywhere overseas. It's just that they won't be accepted as much because the Discover payment network still isn't as large as those for Mastercard, Visa, and American Express. For the widest acceptance one should always have a MasterCard or Visa card available. Don't chance it with only an American Express or Discover processed card.

Posts: 1076I have been in 17 countries since this merger took place and use my Capital One card all the time with no issues. I used it in Colombia in October. I am using it in Ecuador right now. I have been on the road for thirteen and a half months, using both my Capital One cards constantly and have never had them rejected. All over Europe, Centro and South America.
