Having a happy and lasting marriage is like catching lightening in a bottle. You can only do it mostly if you're lucky. Lasting marriage is still possible but a happy one. This is coming from a guy who did love marriage mind you (3 months dating), so I chose the girl myself, can't blame the parents etc. My wife is very good looking, and I was head over heels in love. Gradually then it goes downhill, the real colors start to show off. Everyone has issues. Good looking girls are self obsessed so they don't care about your feelings, bad looking ones have inferiority complexes, educated ones behave like a teacher and talk a lot. Uneducated ones fight dirty. Less intelligent ones don't argue on the same plane as you, you talk past each other a lot. Excuse the generalization here, there are exceptions of course. It's so difficult to find a girl who is willing to work with you in fights, and despite your issues, willing to live with you and still love and care for you. And mind you, you also would have similar issues, you'd have your looks, your education, your intelligence, your nature and she'd be dealing with that. Most of the times it doesn't work out complimentarily. Sometimes attraction is not there, sometimes both get angry over same things, sometimes there's no sexual attention or energy, sometimes no kids, sometimes in-laws etc. In many cases you end up stressing each other out for 10 years before one of you says "can't take it anymore" or find "someone" outside marriage. By then you have kids, and so much more trouble to sort out.

Without going through this I didn't realize why marrying well is such a blessing, not only personally (that I already knew), but even professionally. You end up spending so many days and nights in just fighting over so tiny things that outside your bubble you'd laugh at, that how can someone fight over this. Remember the scenes from Mr and Mrs Smith where they argue over passing salt on the dining table. It's stuff like this. I wish I could bring back the amount of time, health and energy I have spent in fights in my marriage.

Lessons if I could do it again:

- Look at the parents of the girl and see how educated they are, where in their life / career they are.

- Enquire about their family in the community.

- Date the girl for much longer to know her more.

- Do no have kids early in the marriage, divorce is so much simpler without kids.

- Having an agreement on the future life together. Career and kids wise.

- And it's not possible but if there was a way to find it beforehand. Her sex drive and interest. Not having much interest in sex impacts later in marriage when women physically have less appetite for it after having kids.

- And even after all these it may run into troubles as you can't be certain of anything 100%.

You're going to live with this person for most of your life, choose well if you can, most can't.
